With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I think it’s important to remember and be grateful for the many blessing we have in our lives. It’s often too easy to take for granted the good and focus on the bad.

Sometimes we need to take a step back and reflect on the good in our lives, and I would like to take this moment to share a few things I’m thankful for with you.

I am ecstatic to be able to work with the Ottawa Fury Soccer Club. I have worked with the club    for two seasons now and the experience has been, in a word, unreal. I love every second of it. It  has been a constant opportunity to learn from players, coaches and the organization. Being able to realize my vision for Personalized Health Center.

I started the Personalized Health Center because I want to help my clients OPTIMIZE their way of living. Recently, we added Dr. Marc Engfield to the PHC team, and our new program will help you get real, in-depth information about your body as whole —an experience many don’t get with their regular doctors. This has been my primary vision for PHC for the past 5 years. My experience in owning a supplement store and consulting with over 1,200 people over the past few years have given me some insight to better understand where our current system is broken.

My amazing, supportive family. 

Last, but most certainly not least, I am beyond grateful for my beautiful wife and family. Yesterday we celebrated our 8 year anniversary and I can’t believe how lucky I am. Owning your own business is hard and it can be tough to balance work and family. Sometimes it can over-power your life, and my wife has supported me through all of it. She is an amazing mother, an awesome CPA, and beautiful wife. I believe in family and friends as an incomparable foundation to building a worthwhile life, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.

Who is Dr. Marc?

Hello to all of PHC’s present and future clients! It’s only fair that for my first blog I recount who I am, and what interested me in alternative health, in particular: bio-identical hormones.

My early career was very traditional actually, pills & tests just like everybody else…until I had a kind of massive burn-out in 2009 and had to re-think everything. The most shocking realization I made at that time was that “health” is not a subject taught in medical school, that it’s just supposed to exist automatically as long as there is no “disease”.

I had suddenly become that person, who didn’t have a disease but still didn’t feel healthy! And so my interest in alternative health really grew out of the necessity of healing myself, and of finding an “alternative” to the things taken for granted in traditional medicine. So I learned some naturopathy, homoeopathy, acupuncture, energy medicine, and combined those things all together into a unique approach to healing.

I’m very pleased to be collaborating with Hari and the PHC team to share this natural approach with all of our clients. Come on in and get checked out today!

Your Body is Your Business: the PHC Perspective

 

Your body is an investment, plain and simple. It’s a tool that allows you to experience life to its fullest. In my experience, the best way for clients to truly understand their body is to look at their body as a business. Whether you’re a pro-athlete, super-mom, weekend warrior, or a student, investing in your health is the key to living optimally.

As a business owner, your goal is to ensure that your business is maximizing profits and minimizing costs. In the case of your body, this means looking for foods and making choices that will give you the highest return on investment. Your body is your business, and it’s your responsibility to make sure you’re making the most profitable, (I.e., healthy) choices for you.

The one thing I tell every client is to look for changes that will give you the “best bang for your buck,” or the highest return on investment (ROI’s). These are changes that increase your energy and help you feel your best. The solutions are often simple and painless.

My top 3 tips?

  1. Eat Breakfast before you leave the house, every morning. The key word is EAT! Just as you would prepare for your business day, your body needs this fuel to keep running efficiently. By making sure you eat a nutrient packed meal first thing, you protect yourself from allowing external factors control your nutritional schedule.

  1. Eat 1 cup of vegetables for every 50lbs of your body weight everyday. It’s not enough to get in a serving and call it quits. Your body needs to maintain these nutrient levels. Leafy greens should take up no more than 2 of those cups.

  1. Drink 1L for every 50lbs of body weight every day. Just plain water, no coffee or tea.

These are high ROI changes that will help you build a better body. Would you spend time and money on an effort that might harm your business? Probably not. So why do the same to your body? When it comes to making healthy, beneficial changes, it all comes down to changing your perspective. Treat your body like you would your business, and invest high quality foods and nutrients into it. When your body is performing at it’s best, you will get the most out of life.

The PHC Perspective: Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

Last we talked about treating your body like a business, and investing in yourself. In case you missed it, we gave you some tips on the kinds of lifestyle changes you can make to take control of your health.

How can you be sure that the foods you’re eating are helping you reach your health goals? Fortunately, there is an easy enough answer, but the solution is two-fold.

To begin, it comes down to knowing exactly what you’re putting in your body. Just like any good business owner, you need to know where your money is at all times. I encourage my clients to manage their nutrition the same way. Wouldn’t you want to know exactly what you’re eating? The way I look at it is simple: food = nutrients = medicine = money you’re putting into your body to achieve your goals.

People may think they have a clean, healthy diet, but can be dangerously misinformed. Think of common “health” foods, like whole wheat bread, or almond milk. Do you know how many preservatives you can find in these foods?

My top tip? It’s easy, just eat ONE ingredient foods, 90 – 95% of the time.

Let’s say you eat 4 meals daily. That’s 7 days a week, so 4 x 7 = 28 meals.

90% of 28 = ~25.

That would give you about 3 meals weekly where you can eat what you want.

Just keep it simple stick these food groups:

Meat , fish , eggs, vegetables, rice, fruit, nuts, tea, coffee, and water.

Whether you have a family to feed or have a personal goal to achieve, more nutrients = better health.

But what if despite eating clean, whole foods you still feeling bloated or gassy after eating? Or so tired you barely have enough energy to get through the day? Do you ever find yourself running to the bathroom after every meal?

Just because a food is “healthy” doesn’t mean it’s healthy for YOU. One of the most beneficial things you can do for your health is gear the foods you choose to your body’s specific tolerances. Each body is different, and as such, can react differently or be sensitive to different foods.
