While IBS is a disorder that is quite common amongst the population. It is not as severe as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. IBS does relate to the colon, (the large intestine), and manifests in cramping, gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, constipation or diarrhoea.
IBS is not an inflammatory condition which means it does not have any effect on the tissues of the bowel. This also translates to not being a source for cancer of the colon. Albeit, a small amount of IBS cases here in Ottawa may manifest more severe symptoms such as diarrhoea, or constipation, they can still manage their condition with a proper diet, medication, and counselling on lifestyle changes and stress.
